What is the purpose of this? The purpose is that, if you are capturing in YUY2 or UYVY, you can now get a blown up (near full screen) preview for about 40% less CPU power! This is enough of a difference on my system that I can now apply noise reduction or similarly simple capture filters on the fly at 640x480, something I wasn't able to do before. YCrCb to RGB conversion is done in hardware on the video card, and the data is transferred via DirectDraw instead of GDI. This halves the amount of data that the CPU has to blit. If you are capturing two fields, you can choose to preview only one of them.
